My research is centred on small molecule drug discovery and development. We apply the techniques of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry to target validation and the discovery and optimization of anticancer and antimicrobial agents. Among the areas of interest are:
- Peptide and peptidomimetic compounds
- Small molecule enzyme inhibitors and receptor ligands
- Discovery of natural products through activation of biosynthetic gene clusters
- Modulators of histone-modifying epigenetic enzymes
Cancer-related research is focused on novel and selective inhibitors of epigenetic enzymes such as histone acetyltransferases (HATs), histone deacetylases (HDACs), sirtuins and lysine demethylases (LSD1).
I am co-founder of Karus Therapeutics, a drug discovery company with clinical candidate HDAC and PI3K inhibitors undergoing Phase I trials for the treatment of cancer.
