Dr Yongping Bao

Reader in Nutritional Biochemistry

Yongping’s research interests centre on the bioactivities of dietary phytochemicals, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms of isothiocyanates in cancer prevention focusing on signalling pathways, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, autophagy, and angiogenesis.

Ongoing studies are in following areas:

  • Study the interactions between phytochemicals and nutrients, and is aimed at determining the biological effects of foods in relation to their chemical composition, metabolism and biological effects.
  • Hormesis (a biphasic dose response to an environmental agent characterised by a low dose stimulation and a high dose inhibition). Bao’s Team has demonstrated a hormetic effect of dietary isothiocyanates (ITCs) on tumour cell growth, migration and angiogenesis.
  • Nano-formulated isothiocyanates (ITCs). Nano-ITCs have been shown for the first time to minimise the adverse effects of non-conjugate-ITCs, increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to anticancer drugs, and confer greater effects in cancer management.
