New Research Grants Round Announced by Big C

27/07/21

An invitation for new research grant applications has been announced by local cancer charity,
Big C.

This is the first investment in grant awards by the charity since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.
A total of £100,000 will be awarded in late 2021 to a minimum of two, three-year PHD studentships.

Applications are welcomed from across all disciplines, including the social sciences, from those working on projects that have potential benefit to those affected by cancer, now or in the future.

Dr Chris Bushby, Chief Executive at Big C, said, “We are delighted to once again be able to invest in local cancer research projects with the offer of grant funding for two PhD positions. Like so many other sectors, this has been a challenging 18 months within the cancer community and we hope the researchers will welcome this invitation. We look forward to receiving applications from schools and institutions across the research park, UEA and the local hospitals.”

Dr Melanie Pascale, Director of Charitable Operations at Big C said, “At Big C we are very conscious of the importance of continuing to invest in cancer research projects which are undertaken locally, but which have a potential global impact. We were keen to make an investment as soon as it was viable and our decision to focus this on PhD studentships follows Big C’s experience and known outcomes demonstrating the greatest return on investment. Previous similar investments have resulted in very good career progression for the students supported.”

Applications are now open and welcome from all institutions across the Norwich Research Park, the University of East Anglia and the local NHS trusts. The funding available will be allocated to support a percentage of the PhD fees and the full stipend (at nominal rates for EU nationals) to a maximum of £50,000 per PhD over three years. The investment will be made in accordance with Big C’s governance framework for the consideration and review of grant applications. Applications will be subject to consideration by Big C’s Research Advisory Panel of independent scientific experts and Big C Trustees, before the awards are announced in late 2021.
